Guildford Cathedral, Surrey – Event Production on Stag Hill

Standing on top of Stag Hill, Guildford Cathedral is one of Surrey’s best-known landmarks. Its red-brick tower can be seen for miles across the county and from the A3. Set in 22 acres of grounds on the edge of Guildford, the Grade II* listed cathedral is also one of the largest and most striking event venues in the South East.

A modern cathedral built by the people

Architect Edward Maufe won an open competition for the design in 1932, and the foundation stone was laid in 1936. Many of the first bricks were made from clay dug from Stag Hill itself. The Second World War halted the work, and the cathedral was only finished thanks to the Buy a Brick campaign of the 1950s. More than 200,000 people paid to sign their name on a brick, the Queen among them. The cathedral was consecrated in 1961 and is still known as “The People’s Cathedral”.

Maufe drew on the great brick cathedral at Albi in southern France and kept the interior simple: tall pointed arches, pale stone and long sightlines. A restoration in the 2010s removed old acoustic plaster from the vaulted ceilings and brought back the light, airy space he intended.

Event spaces at Guildford Cathedral

• The Nave: light-filled and genuinely vast. It hosts seated dinners for up to 500, drinks receptions for up to 800, and concerts and performances for up to 1,000.
• Seasons: the cathedral’s open-plan event space in the grounds, run by caterers The Tipsy Pigs. It takes gala dinners, award nights and conferences for up to 200, with partitions to divide the room.
• The grounds: 22 acres on Stag Hill, used for outdoor theatre, festivals and photographs with views across Guildford.

The cathedral also hosts degree ceremonies for the University of Surrey next door. For awards dinners, concerts and charity galas that need real scale, few venues in the region can match it.

Lighting, projection and production at Guildford Cathedral

In the nave, we uplight the columns and arches to show off the full height of the building, and pin-spot tables so a vast room feels intimate at dinner. The nave has a long natural echo, so we position speakers carefully to keep speeches clear and music full. For concerts and ceremonies, we add staging, stage lighting and LED screens.

As a Grade II* listed working cathedral, it needs a careful approach. We rig without fixings, use free-standing equipment, and plan load-in around daily services with the cathedral’s events team.
